  2. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) • AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. • AVID focuses on ALL students (Elementary and Secondary), expecting students to rise to the expectations of rigorous coursework. • AVID believes that when we raise the expectations for students, they will rise to the challenge. AVID is there to support students and encourage students to take more rigorous courses • AVID teaches skills and strategies through Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR), expecting students to transfer their learning to all content area classes. • Collaborative Tutorials are a fulcrum of the AVID Elective class, adding an additional layer of learning and support. • Students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support to help them succeed in rigorous courses.

  4. Springfield Public Schools, Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) and AVID • The District, in collaboration with families and community, shall develop in all students the knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes to empower them to be responsible life-long learners and citizens in an ever-changing world. This will be accomplished in a climate that promotes high expectations, strives to meet individual needs, and values diversity • Equal Opportunity Schools’ mission is to ensure students of all backgrounds have equal access to America’s most academically intense high school programs—And particularly that students of color and low-income students have opportunitiesto succeed at the highest levels. • AVID’s Mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. “AVID opens access while providing students with the tools to be successful.”

(Coaching and Certification Instrument—CCI). • Use the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI) to help schools ensure fidelity while implementing the AVID system, especially in the area of instruction, and grow AVID Schoolwide. • Set individual SMART goals that will hold AVID trained teachers responsible for implementing AVID within their classrooms and content areas. • At least 85% of AVID students will receive grades of C or better for secondary or meeting expectation for elementary in core academic courses and the AVID elective in secondary. • Using the Coaching and Certification Instrument (CCI), school will work toward creating a culture where teachers communicate high expectations to students for academic success and college readiness. • Collect data quarterly to monitor students’ progress and respond to students who need support in meeting the expectations.
