Experiment • Response variable: a variable that measures an outcome or result of a study. • Explanatory variable: a variable that we think explains or causes changes in the response variables. • Treatment: any specific experimental condition applied to the subjects (individuals in the experiment). A treatment is a combination of specific values of these variables.

  3. Lurking variable • Lurking variable: a variable that has an important effect on our response, but is not one of explanatory variables. • How to control the effect of lurking variable • Randomization • Control group • Blinding

  4. Well-designed experiment • Control the effects of lurking variables (ex: control group, blinding) • Randomization • Use enough subjects to reduce chance variability

  5. An Example • What is the topic of this example? • What is the response variable in this article? • What is explanatory variable? What are the different levels of this explanatory variable? • Observational study or an experiment? • Any other lurking variables? • Does this study claim the results are “statistically significant”?

  6. Learning Objective for Lab 2 • 13. Randomization of group assignments yields comparison groups that are similar with respect to confounding factors.
