Frequently Asked Questions What do I need to do to stay in the Honors Scholar program for my sophomore year? achieve a 3.25GPA or higher AND earn 50 HOP points if you have a 3.0GPA AND 50 HOP points, you may continue on probation Do we have to complete HOP points every year? No, HOP is only for the freshman year in the Honors Program. How many honors courses per semester should I take? At least one course per semester. What is a seminar? a seminar is topics course exclusively for honors students a seminar is a discussion-oriented 3-credit class What can I take for honors electives? an additional (4th) honors Gen Ed course an additional (3d) honors seminar an honors option – a 200-level or higher course (see p. 20 of the handbook) Can I take honors courses if I study abroad? Yes. Consider an independent study with a JMU professor in your major. Meet with us beforehand. What if I can’t fit an honors course in my schedule? Please meet with your department liaison or a director in the program.

    7. Keys to Success Practice good study habits! Know the program and project requirements – READ THE HANDBOOKS. Read the program’s e-mails Check the program’s website regularly Schedule an appointment with our office to discuss: questions about your status; your study abroad plans; honors option questions; to request a waiver; or any questions about coordinating the program with your major or minor. Get to know your professors, especially those in your major who may become part of your honors project committee. Limit your extracurricular activities.
