Local elected member engagement - aims • Demonstrate the scale of the harm locally caused by tobacco use and the contribution this makes to health inequalities • Demonstrate the cost to local communities, local economies and service providers • Demonstrate the evidence of effectiveness of local action on tobacco and health • Demonstrate the evidence of effectiveness of collaborative action to tackle tobacco use at local population level

  3. Local elected member engagement - how • Working with DsPH and tobacco leads to identify key local authority elected members (e.g.Leaders, portfolio holders) • Discuss best ways to engage them (e.g. individual meetings, health committee or commission meetings) • Use materials and tools generated through joint work with ASH, Faculty of Public Health, smokefree teams in NW, NE, SW • Ready reckoner gives scale of health and wider societal costs

  7. Local elected member engagement- events • Local Government Group conference, Manchester Town Hall, 11 October 2011: ‘Tackling tobacco in your communities. A compelling business case for action’ • Encourage your council leaders, porfolio holders, executive members for health, DsPH, TC coordinators, EHO & TS chiefs to attend • Smokefree North West organising a breakfast meeting before the conference • Theme will be ‘tackling tobacco – opportunities for local authorities in the North West’
