SMART PLACE provides the technology components needed for scholastic literacy, including a program CD, student folders, microphone, and optional headphones. Meet the Mentor, PlaceMaker, and Smart Book are the key components.

  2. What Do You Need? • Program CD for every student • Folder to save student work – “H: drive” • Microphone (if you want to record) • Headphone (optional)

  4. Log in 2. Make sure your name is checked. 3. Click on “GO” 1. Add your name

Meet the Mentor • Smart Place is used anytime after Mentor video • Meet the Mentor is an interactive site – Learn about the mentor’s background, their work and their strategies for success. • Students can take the challenge section individually or collaboratively. Students can think like the mentor in a writing activity.

Smart Book • Smart Book is a selected story for the beginning of the unit • Students can read the story alone or with a group • “Think Links" provide reading strategy practice • “Think Links" help students use reading strategies • Most “Think Links” include Kid Tip\models • Students will be asked to highlight, stamp or write a sticky note using specific strategies

  9. SmartBook • Additional story information is provided with links to “Smart Spots” • Students can save “Sticky Notes” and responses • Teachers can view all student responses including recordings (Find) • Students can save responses to their individual folders (H: Drive) to complete later

  12. Highlight Click on Highlight Tool Highlighted area turns into underlined text

  13. How to Find Highlights • Go to the top bar • Click on “Find” • Click on “Highlights”

  14. Highlight Continued Click on: “Find All Highlights”

  15. Highlights Continued Click on: screens you want to find Click on: “Go To” or “Print”

  16. Print Highlights Go To: Finds the page and sections student highlighted. Print: The best option is to print list.

  17. Sticky Notes Sticky Notes and Stamps can be found in the same way as Highlights

  18. Stamps Stamps can also be found in the same way as Highlights and Sticky Notes. Check “Choose Stamp” to change to a different kinds of stamp.

  19. Dictionary Feature Use magnifier to click on word in red. Dictionary definition appears. Click on: Dictionary– magnifying glass appears

  21. Smart Spot Index • Links to specific information found in the text • Can be used as a prior knowledge review

  22. Think Link Index • Summary of the skills practiced in the specific unit • Links to the page where the skill is practiced
