  3. PLACE What is it like there, what kind of place is it? • Physical Characteristics • Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), climate, vegitation, wildlife, soil, etc. • Human Characteristics • What are the main languages, customs, and beliefs. • How many people live, work, and visit a place.

Site and Situation • Every place has a site and a situation • Site: Internal physical and cultural characteristics of a place • Situation: Location of a place in relation to the physical and cultural characteristics around it. The more connected a place is, the better its situation. • What are the site and situation characteristics of Round Lake? • Site? • Situation?

  5. Space and Spatial interaction • Space: Geographers are always looking at space: rooms, countries, parks, continents, cyberspace, rivers. • The distance from here to there • Spatial Interaction: How do places interact with each other across space?

  6. Spatial Interaction • How does Round Lake’s Interaction with other places around it (Situation) affect its site? • Think about Lakes, Rivers, Roads, Airports and Railways.

Basic Geographic Terms • Be able to identify basic geographic terms to describe the site and situation of a place. • Archipelago, atoll, bay, butte, canyon, cape, cave, cay, Channel, cliff, continent, cove, delta, desert, dune, estuary, fjord, geyser, glacier, gulf, hill, island, isthmus, key, lagoon, lake, marsh, mesa, mountain, ocean, peninsula, plain, plateau, pone, prairie, river, sea, sound, source, strait, swamp, tributary, tundra, valley, volcano, waterfall, wetland
