  1. Social Annotation Technology to Improve Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Cuneiform script: one of the earliest known forms of written expression (circa 2900 BCE) Server farms: to capture and interlink everything ever written or recorded (circa 2006 AD) David G. Lebow, Ph.D., President, HyLighter Inc. and Dale W. Lick, Ph.D, University Professor, Florida State University The 12th Sloan-C International Conference on Asynchronous Learning Networks Orlando, FL, November 10, 2006

  2. On the verge of the next information revolution Text, image, and table views using the HyLighter system DNA sequence displayed with Artemis viewing and annotation tool Technology at the interface between the digital universe and human minds

  3. Types of Social Software • Blogs: personal Web publishing systems • Wikis: collaborative content management systems • Distributed classification systems • Rich site summary (RSS) feeds • Online social annotation systems • HyLighter hybrid multi-media authoring and annotation system

  4. Factors in the Design of the HyLighter System • Purpose(s) of project or activity • Task perspective • Task environment • Type of content or data: well-structured or unstructured • Type of problem: well-structured or ill-formulated • Type of text or image • How the task is organized • Modes of interaction • Degree of collaboration • Relative expertise of participants

  5. HyLighter System for Learning, Assessment, and Document-Centered Group Work • HyLighter is an embodiment of certain conjectures about how people learn and work together in productive ways. • Data from the field (i.e., both from research and practical use) feeds a continuous development cycle.

  6. HyLighter Terminology • Standard Annotation - Hylights - General comments • Inline Annotation - Inline hylights - Inline general comments

  7. Select a section of text to create a “hylight”

  8. Click Submit and the selected section appears in yellow; the linked comment appears in the comment field.

  9. Select Compare All from the View menu. The program displays an aggregated view of all hylights added by participants. Yellow is mine. Blue is theirs. Green is ours.

  10. Click the reverse link icon to locate the highlighted area(s) linked to a comment

  11. Add a threaded comment

  12. Add an inline general comment

  13. Add an inline general comment (continued)

  14. Add an inline hylight

  15. Add an inline hylight (continued)

  16. Project member opens document. Program displays task description and inline annotations.

  17. Two types of task perspective statements • TYPE 1. Knowledge elicitation or explanation: connect to prior knowledge and reveal what you know. “After reading the essay below, select a response to each question by highlighting the entire answer. Write down a clear explanation of why you made each selection.” • TYPE 2. Knowledge tracing or thought report: reveal how you think. “After reading the essay below, select a response to each question. Immediately write down the sequence of steps you went through in your head in selecting your answer. Do not summarize. Describe in detail the actual thoughts you were having at each step.”

  18. Assign document to a project

  19. Add task description and set properties
