Crop & Food Research • is an independent, government-owned company • provides research, technology and services to the arable, vegetable, ornamental, seafood, animal feed, plant products and forestry sectors • employs 370 staff, including a few engineers, based at 8 locations in NZ and 2 in Australia • focuses on providing effective solutions for clients • 42% of income is from privately-funded clients, the balance being Crown-funded

Biofuels research history C&FR as DSIR Crops Division, 1975-1985: • Response to fuel price spikes and security of supply issue (wide & active research…) • Oil seed crops as diesel substitute included rapeseed, soya, sunflower • Carbohydrate crops for alcohols as petrol substitute were sugarbeet, fodderbeet, sweetcorn waste and Jerusalem artichokes • Crop residues and willow for biomass energy
