OUR BELIEF • Effective waste management is critical for the conservation of limited natural resources • Reduction, Reuse and Recycling of waste • Waste is a resource • Segregation at Source is the key • Awareness Drive necessary for improving segregation • Streamlining collection mechanism • Corporate involvement is useful for manpower and financing awareness drive

9. ZERO GARBAGE WARD MODEL

CONCEPT OF ZERO GARBAGE WARD • Ensure almost 100% segregation of waste • Ensure almost 100% collection of waste • Maximize recycling of dry waste • Processing of waste locally within the ward • Strengthening of the secondary collection system and removal of containers / community bins • Minimal amount of waste sent outside the prabhag

11. ZERO GARBAGE WARD MODEL • Realizing the gravity of the situation , Janwani undertook a pilot project in 2011 at Katraj • Zero Garbage Ward Model evolved • Pilot model was implemented by Janwani with PMC, SWaCH and Cummins India Ltd. • Since Feb 2013, the Model is being implemented in 20 Prabhags covering almost 2.25 lac properties Encouraged by the success, it is being implemented in entire city in a phased manner.

APPROACH • Our approach to the problem of Solid Waste Management has been comprehensive • All stakeholders involved will be addressed to improve the efficiency of SWM • Once the stakeholders are a part of the system, sustainability can be easily achieved • Weekly monitoring of collection and segregation level is published on Janwani Website(www.janwani.org) • Peoples participation through awareness drive • Corporate involvement for finance and manpower

15. CORPORATE PARTICIPATION • CSR is now becoming an increasingly important priority for businesses. It is evident that companies are willing to get more involved in the community, leading to a sustainable and healthy environment. • Corporate involvement by employee volunteering and financial assistance is increasing. • Cummins India, KPIT, Persistent Foundation, Bajaj Auto, Serum Institute and others has joined this initiative • Benefits - Section 135 and schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013 as well as Section 55 and 186.

Therefore can be replicated.
