Current State of Pohnpei’s Environment • Pohnpei is leading the way in Conservation and co-management in the FSM: • Marine Resource Conservation act of 1981 • Conservation and Resource Enforcement Act of 1982 • Pohnpei Watershed Forest Reserve and Mangrove Protection Act of 1987 • Solid and Water Conservation Act of 1992 • Marine Sanctuary & Wildlife Refuge Act of 1999 • 1998 PRMC launched-Collaboration of GO and NGOs • 1998 CSP launched – premier conservation NGO • 2004 NBSAP and priority ABS sites determined

  5. The Micronesia Challenge The governments of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Northern Marianas and Marshall Islands Agree to effectively conserve30%of the near shore marineresources and20%of the forest resources across Micronesia by 2020

  6. Community Power in Action • Established community learning network • Increased community participation and stewardship to protect lands and sea • Site management plans completed andin progress with the MPA Network

Our approach to monitoring and Evaluation • Scientific approach (REA,FMS,MC Measures, seagrass and climate change, spawning aggregation, sedimentation study etc…) • Community based monitoring for coral and fish status-building active community involvement to understand status of their resources first hand

Lessons learned • Partnership goes a long way for both GO and NGO-Unified Strength • Community and traditional leaders participation is crucial to succeed • Resources are optimized through partnership • Synergies aligned to serve the community • Both top down and Bottom up approach are essential to successful conservation • Greater understanding is achieved through working together

CEAFM Opportunities • Unite and align all stakeholders in the Pacific to protect coastal fisheries and biodiversity • Champion enabling policy and enforcement to protect fisheries resources Pacific wide • Build a strong support network (master minds) • Support pioneering examples to protect fisheries and livelihoods
