  19. High School Grading System

  20. Choosing Quality/Rigor – AP • The College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college-level classes that you can take while still in high school. They offer challenging course work and a taste of what college classes are like. (https://apstudent.collegeboard.org) • The benefits of taking AP courses are: • To stand out in college admissions (Choosing rigor & building your GPA) • To earn college credit • To skip introductory courses in college • Please note AP courses are Writing Intensive. 8th graders should be enrolled in English I now to be eligible for AP Biology. • North Lenoir offers 8 AP courses: • AP English Language and Composition • AP English Literature and Composition • AP Calculus AB • AP Calculus BC • AP Statistics • AP Biology • AP Environmental Science • AP Computer Science Principles See NLHS Most Rigorous Course Options in your packet (page 5)

  21. Choosing Quality/Rigor – CCP • Career and College Promise (CCP) is a program for current high school students in the 11th or 12th grade that have an unweighted GPA of 2.8+. • CCP are college-level classes taken through Lenoir Community College. Students can earn college credits as well as high school credits. • CCP courses listed on the General Education College Transfer Pathways will transfer to a 4-year college/university with a grade earned of “C” or better. • Some CCP courses substitute/supplant graduation required courses. • CCP as well as AP courses carry the highest quality points (5.0) and help build a strong grade point average (GPA). See NLHS Most Rigorous Course Options in your packet (page 5)

  22. Transfer CCP Crosswalk • Students should use the websites on p. 6 to plan. Eligible students that plan ahead can maximize their opportunity to gain free college credit while in high school. • Eligible students should plan to take a combination of AP and CCP courses while in high school. • Students should check online to determine exactly what college course credits they have obtained with their qualifying AP scores. • It is best practice not to take CCP courses that a student already has credit for based on their AP scores. See Transfer CCP Crosswalk in your packet (page 6)

  23. High School TranscriptSee sample transcript in your Packet (pages 7-9)

  24. 4-YEAR COLLEGE ADMISSION Primary Factors: • Quality/Rigor of Academic Courses - Difficulty of course work (Did you take the most challenging courses offered at your school?) • Academic Performance - Grades (GPA weighted) • Class rank (where your GPA falls among your classmates) • Test Scores (SAT/ACT scores) Secondary Factors: • Extracurricular Activities/Community Service • Essay(s) – not required by all schools • Letter of Recommendation • Demonstrated Interest Note: Minimum grade point average (GPA) = 2.5 Minimum SAT (Math+Reading/Verbal) = 880 Minimum ACT Composite = 17

  25. Registration • Review the High School Course Selection Guidebook closely – a copy is online at www.lcpsnc.org • Review the Registration Sheet (copy in your packet – pages 10-11)and adhere to the directions outlined: • Students should select 8 first choice courses including the minimum 5 required (English, math, science, social studies, and Health/PE) • Students should choose 3 elective courses and 3 alternate elective courses • All math and honors/AP level courses must be approved by your current middle school teachers • Use the Graduation Requirements List (page 3 in your packet) when selecting courses. It is a good idea to have a 4-year high school plan.
