Clarks Knob • Rising to 2,316 feet, Clarks Knob is the highest summit in the Blue Mountain range in Pennsylvania. • It is protected within the Buchanan State Forest just north of the Pennsylvania’s border with Maryland. • It is located east of the higher peak of Mt. Davis in the Appalachian Mountains, and west of the lower South Mountain.

Echo Lake • Echo Lake is typical of the many scenic lakes found in the Northeast. • Echo Lake is named for the way that sound bounces off the surrounding Green Mountains. • The water from Echo Lake eventually follows a series of streams and small rivers, eventually flowing into the St. Lawrence River. • It is located in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, east of Lake Champlain and west of the highest peak in the Green Mountains.

White Sands National Monument • White Sands National Monument includes about 275 square miles of gypsum sand dunes. • It is contained within the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico which is surrounded by mountains. • The mountains and lack of rivers flowing through this area help create the dry conditions needed for gypsum sand dunes.

Red Clouds Buttes • A butte is a hill with steep sides standing in an otherwise flat area. • Buttes are commonly found in the Great Plains of the Midwestern United States. • Red Clouds Buttes are found in the northwest corner of Nebraska, just south of the border with South Dakota and east of Wyoming.

Pine Barrens • Also known as the Pinelands, the Pine Barrens are protected within the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. • Parts of this Reserve are located only 30 miles southeast of the urban center of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, yet most of the area remains rural. • Located within the Atlantic Coastal Plain, this area has sandy, nutrient–poor soil that does not support crops. Many unusual plants are found such as orchids and carnivorous plants.

Suwannee River • The Suwannee River begins in the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and runs through the Okefenokee Swamp located near 31⁰ N, 82⁰ W. • The river crosses the Georgia border into Florida and flows to the Gulf of Mexico near 28⁰ N, 83⁰ W. • The Suwannee is a blackwater river– a river with a deep channel that flows slowly through forested swamps and wetlands.

Mississippi River • Feeds the largest river system in North America • Flows entirely in the United States from Lake Itsaca in Minnesota in the north to the Gulf of Mexico in the south • Runs through 10 states from Minnesota to Louisiana • Drains into 31 states in the United States between the Appalachian Mountains to the east and the Rocky Mountains to the west • Widely used for trade and recreation • 2,320 miles long • Floods periodically with the spring thaw
