  10. We have learned many things about our legal rights!

  11. Hey! Do you know your legal rights?

  12. Come on, come on…..You can think of an answer! We believe in you!

  13. People in our country have many legal rights! • If you are arrested, here are some of your rights: • The right to remain silent! • The right to have a lawyer (even if you have no money!) • The right to have a jury and witnesses! • The right to know what they think you did!

  14. But deaf people can’t hear what a judge says! We can’t hear what the police say! We do not hear what the lawyers say! And the judge, the police, the lawyers and the jury may not understand us! What do we do if we are arrested or are victims or jurors or witnesses or lawyers?

  15. Hey! How can deaf people understand things and be understood in our justice system?

  16. Come on, come on…..You can think of an answer! We believe in you!

  17. DEAF PEOPLE USED TO BE CUT OFF FROM TV AND THE TELEPHONE AND CLASSES AT REGULAR SCHOOLS! BUT TDDS, ADAPTIVE DEVICES, CLOSED CAPTIONING AND COMPUTERS HAVE CHANGED THAT!

  18. AND THERE ARE A LOT MORE (AND BETTER) INTERPRETERS NOW! AND THAT’S WHAT YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM! REAL TIME CAPTIONING HELPS, TOO!

  19. HERE IS AN INTERPRETER IN THE COURTROOM!

  20. HERE ARE INTERPRETERS AND REALTIME CAPTIONING IN THE COURTROOM!

  21. How would you communicate in our system of justice without certified interpreters and realtime captioning? Hey!

  22. Come on, come on…..You can think of an answer! We believe in you!

  23. If the police Arrested you, What would You do? Speech- Read the cop? C’mon!!!! Give Me a break!!!!

  24. Speechreading is hard, especially if the other person has gum. a pipe, a mustache or a beard! And many sounds Look the same on the mouth! You have the right to remain silent! What???? Wah! Wah!

  25. Do you think That you can Write notes To the judge? Get real!!!! You may not Understand What the judge Writes! The Judge may not Understand Your note!

  26. What? Huh? I do Not understand this note! ????? I WANT MY MOMMY!

  27. DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR MOM OR A FRIEND CAN INTERPRET FOR YOU IN COURT? GET A CLUE! YOU NEED TO GET A REAL, CERTIFIED INTERPRETER WHO KNOWS HOW TO INTERPRET IN COURT!

  28. MY POOR BABY! SNIFF! SNIFF! MY POOR BABY! YOU WILL GO TO JAIL FOR 50 YEARS! WAH! WAH! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND!

  29. BUT WHY SHOULD OUR GOVERNMENT AND OUR COURTS HELP MAKE SURE THAT DEAF PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THEM IN OUR SYSTEM OF JUSTICE?

  30. Hey! Why should our government and court make sure deaf people understand what is happening?

  31. Come on, come on…..You can think of an answer! We believe in you!

  32. In 1776 our Founding fathers Wrote the Declaration of Independence! All men, um, I mean People, were Created equal!

  33. But how can Deaf people be ‘equal’ if the Hearing people Know what is Going on in court And deaf people Don’t know?

  34. In 1789 our Country Adopted A new Constitution With ten Amendments to Protect us Called ‘the Bill of Rights’.

  35. ‘we the people will have freedom of speech, press, petition, assembly and religion. We will also be protected in court with freedoms like having lawyers, your own witnesses, juries and fast, public trials! There will be no double jeopardy, unreasonable search and seizure, and cruel or unusual punishment!’

  36. But these Freedoms can’t Help you if You don’t Understand What is being Said in court!

  37. Congress has written even more laws to help disabled people!

  38. We in congress Have passed laws Like the Americans with Disabilities act!

  39. But these laws will not help you if You do not know what is going on and what is being said!

  40. Hey! What have you learned from this?

  41. Yeah, we know you are tired….We are tired, too…Hey, I think my watch stopped!

  42. We have learned • Many things! • AS AMERICANS WE HAVE MANY LEGAL RIGHTS! • DEAF PEOPLE NEED INTERPRETERS AND OTHER SERVICES TO MAKE SURE THEY GET THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS!

  43. COURTS MUST BE FAIR FOR THE BLIND! BUT DEAF PEOPLE ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE WHOSE RIGHTS MUST BE PROTECTED!

  44. IF DEAF PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS HEARING PEOPLE, AND IF BLIND PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS SIGHTED PEOPLE…. THEN PEOPLE IN WHEELCHAIRS SHOULD HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS PEOPLE WHO DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN WHEELCHAIRS!

  45. BUT WE DO NOT JUST HAVE RIGHTS AS DEAF PEOPLE! WE ALSO HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES! WE MUST TRY TO COMMUNICATE AS BEST WE CAN! WE MUST BE GOOD CITIZENS! WE MUST HELP OUR POLICE AND OUR COURTS!

  46. THAT’S ALL, FOLKS! HOPE YOU LIKED OUR SHOW AND LEARNED A LOT!

  47. PRODUCED BY THE FLYING HANDS OF THE S-4 STUDENTS OF THE EL PASO RDSPD, HILLSIDE ELEMENTARY
