  2. Project Goals • Fix “leaky pipeline” of Hispanic students toward graduate work • Provide role models for students at majority-Hispanic schools • Build strong graduate program • Build communities of interest with Texas and graduate partners

  3. Example of Student Profile • Grew up in El Paso. Both parents graduated from HS in El Paso; did not complete college. Mom works for state as controller. Dad works as HR as benefits rep. • Also considered UT-Austin, Texas Tech, Rice, Stanford, ASU. Attended UTEP because is real close to his family and decided to stay. Also felt UTEP was right up there with the other schools.

Undergraduate Program Objectives Objective 1a: UTEP CS graduates will be able to apply techniques, methodologies, tools and skills to build high-quality computing systems that function effectively and reliably in the emerging information infrastructure. Objective 1b: UTEP CS graduates will be able to work in teams, to apply theoretical methods, to apply principles of software engineering, and to model real-world processes and objects. Objective 1c: UTEP CS graduates will be able to serve as productive and ethical members of society and the profession. Objective 1d: UTEP CS graduates will have the motivation and the ability to adapt to evolving methodologies of computing. Objective 1e: UTEP CS graduates will understand graduate study as a professional path, and significant numbers of our graduates will attend graduate school.

Project Impacts • Educated 40 additional Hispanic graduate students (7 Ph.D.s) • Placed 6 Hispanic students into top CS & CE Ph.D. programs • Obtained separate Ph.D. program in CS at UTEP • Institutionalized role of graduate program coordinator • Helped build national consortium of HSIs for computing
