BELLWORK • Pick up a 1920’s slang handout from the front and interpret the following sentences into modern language: • I went out with my keen bim to a flick, and our blind dragon caught us smooching! • Horsefeathers! My sheba is no ham-and-egger, she is the bee’s knees! • That shiek is the cat’s meow. I go gaga every time I see him! • Let’s take a jalopy to a talkie and then get a white cow afterwards. • I challenge you to write your own 1920’s slang sentence……..  I hope it’s divine! • THINKER: Do you think Presidents are scrutinized too much by the media? Or is this justified? Explain!

  4. A New President • Warren G. Harding became President in 1920. • Isolationism (major policy) • Avoid political or economic alliances with foreign countries • Nativism • Favor native born Americans over immigrants

  5. Albert Fall – Harding’s Secretary of the Interior. Leased government oil fields to wealthy friends in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. Oil field at Teapot Dome, Wyoming went for $400,000! Fall became first cabinet member to go to prison. Teapot Dome Scandal

  6. The Coolidge Presidency • Harding dies in 1923 – Calvin Coolidge becomes the new President. • Lassiez-faire business policies • Minimize government intervention • Kellogg-Briand Pact: made war illegal; signed by 14 countries
