  1. Strategies For Coping: (ii) What Experienced Teachers Say • 1. Overcoming the urge to be overly self critical “No teacher is ever 100% happy with any lesson, and it’s important to let go of the things that don't go as you hope.” “Remember what went well as much as what went badly.”

  2. Strategies For Coping: (ii) What Experienced Teachers Say • 2. Look After Yourself “What I know now is how much easier life is if you do have one day each week where you don't even think about school!” “Allowing myself sufficient down time of an evening and weekend.” “Eat breakfast.” “Get enough sleep” “If you get ill, don’t struggle into work, infect everyone else, and extend the life of your illness by several days. Better to take 1 or 2 days off.” “Ignore the guilt of calling in sick.”

  3. Strategies For Coping: (ii) What Experienced Teachers Say • 3. Put Marking In Perspective “Less is sometimes more with marking, and there are merits to in-class correction for some exercises.” “Setting the marking you can deal with given the demands of lesson preparation etc.”

  4. Strategies For Coping: (ii) What Experienced Teachers Say • 4. Talk to Someone “I suppose my advice would be don't suffer in silence …” “Talking things over with colleagues, both the wise old pros and fellow newcomers.” “One of the things which kept me going was the help and unwavering support of my Head of Dept. who was always there to check my marking, talk through lesson plans and fine-tune strategies to deal with difficult pupils. I think the main thing is to make use of those who are there to help you.” “Having lunch with colleagues rather than at your desk - to create time to talk about other things, and build up relationships with people.  You then hear tales of other peoples' lessons which put your own experiences into perspective, and you pick up useful information about students.”

  5. Strategies For Coping: (ii) What Experienced Teachers Say • 5. This Too Will Pass “You have to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that it does get easier and that every teacher has been through it and understands what you are going through.”

  6. A Way Of Thinking…. Remember, you are looking at them; they are not looking at you.
