  1. Secondary National Strategy Produced as part of the Partnership Development Schools (PDS) Strategy Phase 3 2008-09 (Lead PDS: The Park Community School. Contact Chris Ley (cley@parkcommunity.devon.sch.uk)

  2. Context • Government initiative implemented 2001 • Originally “Key Stage 3 Strategy” • Aimed at addressing Key Stage 3 “dip” • DfES funded consultants in LAs • Focus on Teaching and Learning practice (e.g. 3 part lessons) • Now also relating to Key Stage 4

  3. Key Features • Strategies to raise standards 11 – 16 • Help students to achieve potential in National Curriculum subjects • “Pedagogy and Practice” guidance for teachers • CPD programmes • Underpinned by: EXPECTATIONS, PROGRESSION, ENGAGEMENT and TRANSFORMATION

  4. Evaluation (1) • Apparent positive impact on raising Level 5 at end of KS 3 in Core Subjects • Quality of teaching and learning improving as Strategy techniques applied • Impact greatest in Schools where Strategy is led by a member of the Senior Leadership Team • Intervention programmes not being as effective as Strategy hoped

  5. Evaluation (2) • Progress slow in developing Literacy and Numeracy across the curriculum • Primary to Secondary phase transfer improving • Lower achieving boys and those with EAL perhaps benefiting the most

  6. Future • The suspension of Key Stage 3 SATS has caused a re think in terms of the SNS focus • Increasing weight now given to Key Stage 4 and the overall progress made 11 – 16 • Likely that the SNS will undergo review evaluation and reform in the near future.
