Letter from Birmingham Jail Background • In the early 1960’s Birmingham, Alabama was one of the most racially segregated cities in America. • The Birmingham Campaign was a movement started by the SCLC (and MLK) to bring attention to the terrible treatment and inequalities blacks faced in Birmingham. • Boycotts, marches, “sit-ins” were organized as “direct action” or peaceful protesting

Letter from Birmingham Jail • After MLK was jailed for his involvement in the Birmingham Campaign, he wrote an open letter to 8 white Alabama Clergymen. • King's letter is a response to a statement they made. The clergymen agreed that social injustices existed but argued that the battle against racial segregation should be fought solely in the courts, not in the streets.

  6. Group Work • Each group of 3 will be given a section of MLK’s letter and questions to answer. • Then, you’ll present the essential information from your section to the class.
