  4. Zeus • Son of Rhea and Kronos • Becomes king of the gods • Throws thunderbolts • Likes the ladies • Married to his sister, Hera

  6. Poseidon • God of the sea • Creator of earthquakes • Creator of horses • Seahorses (hippocamps) • Whitecaps • Carries an all powerful trident

  8. Hades • God of the underworld • Also the name of the underworld • Has a 3 headed dog as a pet • Elysian fields = good • Tartarus = bad • Weapon of power is the helm of darkness • Married to Persephone

  10. Hera • Wife and sister to Zeus • Goddess of women and marriage • Symbols are the cow and peacock

  11. Demeter • Goddess of grain and fertility • Mother to Persephone • Controls the seasons

  12. Apollo • God of light, medicine, music, and poetry • Twin brother to Artemis • Symbols are the lyre and bow & arrow • Patron of Delphic oracle

  13. Artemis • Goddess of the hunt and wilderness • Twin sister to Apollo • Chaste goddess • Has a tendency to hunt/ kill men that like her

  14. Haphaestus • God of fire, craftsmen, technology, and volcanoes • Symbols are the hammer and anvil • Lame = weak and ugly • Created most of the magical objects for the gods • Husband to Aphrodite

  15. Aphrodite • Goddess of love and beauty • Born an adult from the genitals of Zeus that were thrown into the sea • Gave Helen to Paris and caused the Trojan War • Has jealousy/ego issues • Magic girdle that no man can resist – made by her husband

  16. Ares • God of war and bloodlust • Has magical brass armor and spear made by Hephaestus • Keeps Aphrodite as a mistress

  17. Athena • Goddess of heroes and knowledge • Born from Zeus’ headache fully armed and grown • Chaste goddess • Symbols are the owl, war helmet, and shield with the head of medusa • Patron of Athens

  18. Hermes • Messenger to the gods • Winged sandals/ helmet • Heralds staff • Trickster • Represents speed and efficiency

  19. Dionysus • Was once human • Created wine = granted immortal life • God of wine and partying

  20. Hestia • Goddess of the Hearth and Home • Lesser known Olympian • Oldest sister to Zeus • All food and meals are burnt as offerings to her • Passive and Chaste

  21. Demigods & Heroes • Children or grandchildren of gods/goddesses and humans • Mortal • Slay monsters • Usually have some sort of “super power” • Strength • Speed • Bravery

  22. Amazons • Tribe of women warriors • Turns out they were probably real • Only interact with men to have children (get rid of all male babies) • Wonder Woman

  25. Charon • Ferryman for dead souls over the river Styx • Must pay him with two gold coins in order to get across • If you have no money you must wait 100 years in limbo

  26. Basilisk • Half rooster and half serpent • King of the serpents • Kills people with its stare

  27. Satyr • Half man half goat • Pan is their leader • Protects shepherds and wild animals

  28. Centaur • Bottom of a horse, top of a man • Teachers • Warfare • Astronomy/ Astrology • Do not intermix with humans often

  29. Chimaera • Body of a lion, tail becomes a snake, heads of a lion and a goat • Sibling to Cerberus and the Hydra

  30. Harpy • Half woman and half bird • Snatches things • Agents of punishment

  31. Furies • Creatures of vengeance • Three sisters • Keep the souls of suicides • Can sometimes do the bidding of Hades

  32. Gryphon • Body of a lion, head and wings of an eagle • Guardians of treasure • Found in religions in both Europe and Asia

  33. Minotaur • Half man and half bull • Son of king Minos of Crete • Forced to live in a labyrinth • Killed by Theseus

  34. Pegasus • Winged horse • Popped out of Medusa’s head when it was cut off – father is Poseidon from the rape • He was mortal, but turned into a constellation on the day he died

  35. Siren • Beautiful women • Their song would hypnotize sailors and make them crash their boats and drown

  36. Medusa • Snakes instead of hair • Turns people to stone with her stare • Was once a beautiful woman – turned into a gorgon

  37. 3 Fates • 3 women • Depicted as old and heartless • One spins the thread of a persons life • One measures the thread of life • One cuts the thread of life
