The Greek Gods • Twelve major gods in ancient Greece • They looked like humans and acted like humans • But they were immortal – they could not die • Each god had special importance over one part of the world • They were a family, but did not get along • Romans kept the same gods, mostly, but changed the names

  3. Zeus, the Thunderer • Roman name = Jupiter • God of the Sky • Storms, wind, etc. • Also, King of the gods • god of kings and justice • Hit people with Thunderbolts • Lots of Love Affairs

  4. Hera, Wife of Zeus • Also, his sister • Protector of Marriage • Roman: Juno • Familiar story: • Her husband sleeps with a mortal woman • The woman has a child • Hera gets angry • Hera punishes the woman and the children

  5. Poseidon, the Earth-Shaker • Roman: Neptune • God of the sea • Zeus’ brother • Second in power and importance to the Greeks • Carried a trident – a three-pointed spear • He was angry at Odysseus, so the sea kept him away from home

  6. Hades, God of the Dead • Roman - Pluto • Brother of Zeus and Poseidon • King of the Underworld, where people go after they die • NOT evil. Only grouchy. • Stole his wife, Persephone, from her mother – Demeter, the goddess of farming • Persephone stays with Hades four months out of the year • That is where winter comes from – Demeter won’t let anything grow

  7. Athena, Goddess of Wisdom • Roman: Minerva • Also, a Goddess of war • Strategy, clever plans • Goddess of Civilization • Athens was her special city • Zeus’ daughter • No mother • Born out of Zeus’ head

  8. Apollo, The most perfect of Gods • Son of Zeus, Twin brother of Artemis • Most beautiful of all the Gods • God of Music, Light, Truth, Medicine, Art, and the Sun • People went to his oracle to learn the future • Oracle at Delphi • Apollo’s priest • could not lie • Spoke in riddles

  9. Artemis, the Maiden Goddess • Roman: Diana • Twin Sister of Apollo • Goddess of hunting and wild animals • Protector of youth and virginity • Goddess of the Moon

  10. Aphrodite, Goddess of Love • Roman: Venus • Born out of the sea foam • Could seduce both men and gods • Liked to use her beauty to get whatever she wanted. • Wife of Hephaestus, the ugly god of fire • she was never faithful to him

  11. Eros, another God of Love • Roman: Cupid • Aphrodite’s son • He would shoot people with invisible arrows • If the arrow hit you, you would fall in love with the next person you saw

  12. Hermes, the Trickster • Son of Zeus • Messenger of gods • Had a helmet that made him invisible • and a pair of shoes with wings on them, so he could fly • God of merchants magicians, and thieves

  13. Ares, God of War • Son of Zeus and Hera; both parents hated him. • Greeks called him bully and coward. • Called Mars by Romans • Romans thought he was magnificent and glorious • Romans liked war more than the Greeks did

  14. Hephaestus, the Smith • Roman: Vulcan • God of fire and blacksmiths • Zeus’ and Hera’s son • Ugly, and also crippled (he could not walk) • Married to Aphrodite (she is not faithful to him)

  15. Hestia, Goddess of Home • Zeus’ sister • Every city had a hearth (fireplace) dedicated to Hestia • Her followers would make sure that the fire NEVER went out

  16. Dionysus, God of wine • Roman: Bacchus • Another son of Zeus • God of wine, madness, and agriculture • Late-comer • He was not considered a god for hundreds of years • Supposedly, Hestia left Olympus, and Dionysus took her place
