  1. Summary of Town Hall meeting on WRF user input to Vx system Tressa L. Fowler

  2. WRF User Town Hall meeting • At AMS in San Antonio • About 50 attendees • Variety of operational, research, corporate, and university users • Local replay for about 20 NCAR folks.

  3. What we discussed: • Observations • What are the verification questions? • Specific statistics • Specific graphics

  4. Radar Soil moisture Microwave brightness temp Scatterometer winds Lightning data Satellite data Snow cover Stage II and IV Mesonet data Cloud track One of: (Water vapor drift winds)* (Water, Vapor, Drift, Winds) (Water vapor, Drift winds) (Water, Vapor drift winds) (Water vapor drift, Winds) (Water, Vapor drift, Winds) (Water, Vapor, Drift winds) (Water vapor, Drift, Winds) Observations

  5. Things for us to think about regarding observations: • (How) can these observations be incorporated into the WVT? • What methods make sense for these types of obs?

  6. How good is WRF with respect to: Low-level moisture structure, gradient in moisture, vertical structure Sea breeze front, timing and movement of cold fronts, etc. What products are best for initialization of NDFD? **Which model is best? ** Identify situations where model works well Determine baseline of model performance What questions might you use the verification system to answer?

  7. Identify biases Impact assessment What parameterization is best? What features are the result of nesting and grid boundaries? Does WRF get approximately correct number of events? Does bias correction on the output improve the forecast? What questions might you use the verification system to answer?

  8. Things for us to think about regarding research questions: • (How) can these questions be answered by WVT?

  9. Things for us to think about regarding statistics and graphics: • Do we have specific statistics or graphics that we believe should be incorporated?

  10. (Re) Name the “toolkit” contest • The suite of statistical methods that will be used to verify the WRF is currently being called the WRF verification toolkit or WVT. • We hate this name. • “System” is reserved for the larger software package type thing that will contain the toolkit. • Submit your proposed name in the box near the registration materials.
