  2. Hill or Mountain?? What is the difference?

  3. Peak • the pointed top of a mountain or ridge

  4. Atoll • Atolls are islands formed by coral reefs

  5. Butte • Buttes are lone hills of hard rock, with steep sides and flat tops.

  6. Mesa Like buttes, mesas are flat-topped rock hills with steep sides, but they are larger than buttes.

  7. Plateau • A plateau is a large area of high, flat land with steep sides.

  8. Volcano • mountain or hill, usually having a cuplike crater at the summit, formed around such a vent that ash and lava go through

  9. Plain • a plain is flat and has rich Soil; it is often used as farmland

  10. Valley • more or less flat and relatively low region drained by a great river system.

  11. Dune • a sand hill or sand ridge formed by the wind, usually in desert regions or near lakes and oceans. In what country would you find a dune?

  12. Canyon • a deep valley with steep sides, often with a stream flowing through it.

  13. Glacier • mass of ice formed from snow falling and accumulating over the years and moving very slowly, often descending from high mountains

  28. delta • Forms when a river flows into a body of standing water, such as a sea or lake, and deposits large quantities of sediment

  29. Lake • a body of fresh or salt water of considerable size, surrounded by land. Which state has over 10,000 lakes and/or rivers?
