  2. Entamoeba histolytica Can cause amoebic dysentery which is a serious disease that enters the body by contaminated food and water It lives in large intestine and causes deep ulcers It results in severe pain and diarrhea

  3. Plasmodium Causes malaria It is characterized by severe chills, fever, sweating, fatigue, and great thirst. Victims die of anemia, kidney failure or brain damage Plasmodium has caused more human deaths than any other protists

  4. Giardia lamblia Causes giardiasis It is characterized by severe diarrhea and intestinal cramps Animals carry the disease parasite and people get the disease by drinking contaminated water The disease is usually not fatal if treated by medications

  5. Trypanosoma Can cause African Sleeping sickness It is transmitted by the Tsetse fly The disease is characterized by fever, lethargy, mental deterioration and coma

  6. Trypanosoma cruzi Causes Chaga’s disease It is transmitted by the Kissing bug Patients with chaga’s disease suffer from fever and severe heart disease

  7. Toxoplasmosis gondii Causes toxoplamosis The disease causes few or no symptoms in adults with healthy immune systems, but can be dangerous to a developing fetus or new born It is carried by birds, rodents and domestic cats

Gonyauluax catanella Produces an extremely strong nerve toxin that can be lethal In the summer these protists undergo tremendous population explosions and turn the ocean red (Red Tide) The toxin released in the water kills tons of fish People who eat the shell fish at this time may be poisoned
