  4. Timeline • 1624 - Dutch establish Fort Zeelandia on island of Formosa • 1662 - Ming dynasty claimed Taiwan from Dutch • 1885 - Qing dynasty made Taiwan a province of China • 1895 - Japan claimed Taiwan after Treaty of Shimonoseki

Treaty of Shimonoseki • First Sino-Japanese War (1 August 1894 – 17 April 1895) Treaty of Shimonoseki 17 April 1895 •   “…China cedes to Japan in perpetuity and full sovereignty the following territories, together with all fortifications, arsenals, and public property thereon…” • China had failed.   13. 1949 • The Communist Party defeated the Nationalist Party (KMD) ending a 22-year Civil War, establishing the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on 1st October 1949 • KMD were forced to flee to Taiwan • Mao stresses the importance of eventual unification with Taiwan under a principle of “One China," which will be foundation for the Chinese government's policy on Taiwan for the next 50 years. http://apdl.kcc.hawaii.edu/~taiwan/history.htm

  16. ROC • Republic of China considers PRC to be a rebel government and assumes that in the future ROC will regain control of the mainland.

Recent developments • 1954 The U.S. signs a mutual-defense treaty with Taiwan • 1971 Taiwan is expelled from the United Nations and its seat given to China • 1972 U.S. President Richard Nixon visits China and severs official relations with Taiwan • 1979 U. Recent developments • 1990 – KMT defeats Democrartic Progressive Party • 1991 – The end of the war with China is announced • 1995 - on the eve of the country's first free presidential elections China performs military actions U.S. responds by sending a fleet of naval reinforcements • 1998 – “ three no's" policy: no "two Chinas", no independence for Taiwan, and no membership for Taiwan in international organizations that require statehood for membership.

Recent developments • 1999 - Lee infuriates Beijing by saying China and Taiwan enjoy a "special state-to-state relationship," implying that Taiwan is an independent sovereign nation • 2002 - Taiwan joined the WTO as Chinese Taipei • 2006 - In February - Taiwan ended its participation in the National Unification Council that had been created with China to work on ending the divided nation. China called the decision "a disaster" for the future.

  22. Summary • Taiwan China didn’t communicate for decades • Reopened relations caused friction between 1995-2008 • Taiwan is afraid of dominance by China • China is afraid of independence by Taiwan • America refused to take sides adopting the policy of “…we acknowledge China’s position..”
