  2. Introduction For the next 10 classes we will explore the historical and contemporary social, political, scientific and economic dimensions of food on a global scale.

  3. Introduction THE AREAS WE WILL COVER ARE: THE HISTORY OF AGRICULTURE / FOOD - societal factors FOOD SECURITY - economic issues FUTURE OF FOOD - political, scientific and ethical dimension.

  4. Class Format EACH CLASS WILL BE STRUCTURED THE SAME WAY: Group presentation Discussion Lecture

  5. Group presentation • Groups of 3– your choice(we will confirm today – NO CHANGES) • The presentations should be between 10 - 15 min MAX • This will depend on the complexity of the article • I recommend a simple PPT that serves as an outline • You must submit a written summary of the presentation on the same day BEFOREyou present • The presentations are based on an assigned readings (5-7 pgs) • TheENTIREclass is responsible to read EVERYarticle so that everyone can participate in the discussion.

  6. Presentation Expectations PRESENTATION: • 10 – 15 min MAX • Main Point – 1 sentence – what does the author discuss • Vocabulary / concepts • Argument – what is the author arguing • Facts/evidence – how does the author support his/her claim • Conclusion – (author’s) • Your analysis • (This could be a point you disagree with or an overall assessment of the article) 2 CRITICAL QUESTIONS – based on authors argument [NOT what do you think..]

  7. Discussion Expectations Discussion: The presenters will have prepared 2 critical questions. Immediately after their presentation the class will address their questions. You may choose whichever one you like to explore. You may offer your own observation or question as well. This is not a free for all. One person speaks at a time. ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING other than the speaker

Reflections EVERY ARTICLE: • Every student must submit a 1 page reflection on the reading each class. • This is your critique of the article – NOT A SUMMARY • This is due BEFORE the presentation. INSTRUCTIONS: 1 – ½ pgs. MAX 12pt font Double spaced include 2 critical questions your name / title of article / author(s)/ year of publication * MUST BE IN HEADER [not part of body]

  9. Class Format One of the reasons for the class structure is to introduce you to the format of college/university classes. Presenters You (students) are responsible to lead the class on your presentation day – you need to be prepared – be rehearsed and be professional. Audience It is expected that you will have read the assigned readings and participate actively in discussion in EVERY class . Be respectful. Be attentive and listen to the presenters, no talking, no cell phones.

  10. RECAP • Presenters • PPT / 2 critical questions / Summary sheet • PPT or summary sheet must be uploaded to drop off box night before presentation. • Audience: • 1 -1 ½ page reflection : DUE AT START OF CLASS • Active participation in discussion • Lecture: Note taking * the presentation does not necessarily reflect or connect to the lecture of the day. Additional resources will be posted.
