  1. Behaviorism Objections

  2. Behaviorism Behaviorism: Mental states are either behavior or dispositions to behavior. Necessarily, someone is in pain iff he is crying or wincing or… Necessarily, someone believes that P iff they are disposed to answer “yes” when asked whether P or…

  3. Dispositions The Conditional Analysis: Necessarily, X is disposed to Y when Z iff X would Y if Z. X has a finkish disposition to Y when Z iff (i) X is disposed to Y when Z, but (ii) X would not Y if Z because it would lose the disposition in that situation.

  4. Dispositions Lewis’s Conditional Analysis: Necessarily, X is disposed to Y when Z iff X has some intrinsic property P such that, it would Y when Z provided that it retained P. X has a masked disposition to Y when Z iff (i) X is disposed to Y when Z, but (ii) X would not Y if Z even if it retained all of its intrinsic properties.

  5. Dispositions Mumford’s Conditional Analysis: Necessarily, X is disposed to Y when Z iff X would Y when Z in normal circumstances. X has an Achilles’ disposition to Y when Z iff (i) X is disposed to Y when Z, but (ii) X would not Y if Z even when under normal circumstances.
