  2. Archaeology/arqueología • The study of the material remains of human cultures. • Artifacts • written records • evidence of human structures and behaviors

  3. Archaeologist / arqueólogo • An archaeologist is a person who studies past human cultures by investigating different sites around the world. He/She looks for common things like cultura/culture.

  4. Archaeology/ arqueología - Culture/ cultura • Family/familia • Time and Land/tiempo y patria • Religious beliefs/fe en su religíon • Rules and values/reglas • Language/Alphabet/ idoma/alfabeto • Technology/tecnología • Food/Fashion/Shelter/ comida/estilo • Arts, Music, Dance/ arte, musica, baile • Government/gobierno • Games and Leisure/ juegos

  5. Archaeological Tools Archaeologists use different tools to search these sites. Some include items that you can find at a local Wal-Mart. Trowel/desplantador- used for detailed work in a unit. A whisk/escobilla broom is used to clean the floors and artifacts off to get a better look at them A probe/sonda is placed in the ground to determine if there are artifacts present. tape measure/cinta metrica - used for mapping and plotting units

  6. Archaeological Tools Archaeologists use screens/tamiz to sift through the soil and find artifacts A shovel/pala is used to dig and find the different strata.

  7. Site Terms • Excavation/excavación - is a site that has been found to have some artifacts of a human civilization; the area an Archaeologist works in. Newest Layer 2003 1 Oldest Layer 1900 4 Stratigraphy/estratagrafía - The Layers of Earth the top is the newest layer and everyone below is sequentially older.

  8. Site Terms • Floor Plan/planta - is a grid that is drawn to show the location of artifact. It is based on the Grid System. Unit/unidad- is a section of the grid system. Each one is marked and searched individually for clues of civilizations.

  9. Site Terms • Field Notes - are notes taken by an archaeologist. They are used to prove the validity of his/her findings. Everything done and found must be written. • Profile/perfil - are drawing showing the artifact in context or as untouched as possible so as to show how it was found. • Midden - is an ancient trash heap. It is considered one of the most valuable finds because it can give information about more than one aspect of culture.
