  2. When you see a snowy owl it is clear how it got its name. It got its name because it is so white. The male owls are generally whiter than the females. As males grow older they get whiter. Females are never completely white they usually remain brownish with dark markings. They live mainly in the Arctic in wide open areas called tundra.
