  24. Objectives of Target Setting • To raise awareness amongst students on their individual potential • Guide students using targets as a goal they should work towards

  25. Creating a Scaffold for Progress • Each student will be given an initial target grade for all subjects he or she offers • Once a target is reached, the teachers and parents can revise the target upwards

  26. Performance – tracking progress • Students enter their targets into their school diary. After every test, the students compare their results against their targets to keep track of their performance • Teachers use class contact time and other times to discuss with the students on their targets and guide the students to work towards achieving them

  31. Upper Secondary Curriculum • Prepares pupils to continue their studies in an Institute of Higher Learning e.g. JCs or Polytechnics • Need to understand the Entry Requirements for the JCs and Polytechnics

  32. Features of the Subject Combinations • Only the relevant 6 subjects are required for JC and relevant 5 subjects for Polytechnic entry • Majority of pupils take between 7 to 8 subjects. Pupils can take a 9th subject on a case by case basis • Subject combinations are broad-based and include English, Mother Tongue, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences and Humanities

  34. Principles used in Streaming • Streaming tries to match a student with a subject combination by considering ability and interest • Streaming is meritocratic. Students are placed using performance in terms of overall score & relevant subjects • Subject to places available for a particular subject combination

Streaming Process • Application by pupils and parents – represents preference and assessment of strengths and weaknesses by pupils and parents • Posting by school • considers application, • professional assessment of strength and weakness of pupils using their results and teachers’ knowledge of the pupil, • applies meritocratic principle when places are limited by using overall score

  37. Enhancing the Normal Course A number of changes have been introduced to the Normal Course to enable our students to: • benefit more from their learning experience • do well in school and progress as far as possible in their post-secondary education Enhancing the Normal Course

  43. Students in NA Course who perform well will be considered for the NA Through-Train Programme, where students skip the GCE N Level Exam and prepare directly for the GCE O Level Exam in their 5th year in the school.
