  2. Fifth Grade Information The following slides contain district and school information. If you have additional questions, please contact the content teacher or your child’s advisory teacher (please see the first slide for contact information).

  3. Accessing Grades: The Comal Website has a link called, “Parent Connection”. Parents may access their child’s grades. Parents will need to create an account if you do not already have one. The Link: http://www.comalisd.org/Parent_Connection/

Grading Procedures Calculating Six Weeks Averages Weight of Grades (Grades 2-5) All numeric averages reported on progress reports and report cards will be determined using a percentage grading system. Grades 2-5 / All Core Subjects (except Language Arts) Independent Assessments 40% Daily Grades 40% Quizzes and CAs 15%  Homework Grades 5 % 2-5 Language Arts: Independent Assessments 40% * Daily Grades 40% CA and Published Writing 15%  Homework 5%

  5. Student Success Initiative (SSI) SSI: Student Success Initiative5th grade students must pass the STAAR reading and math test to be promoted to 6th grade. Students have three opportunities to pass the STAAR reading test and three opportunities to pass the STAAR math test (two during the spring and one during the summer). If a student does not pass one or both tests, the school must give the student the additional instruction after each testing opportunity, and the student must participate in that instruction. After the 3rd testing opportunity, a student who is unsuccessful on the STAAR reading or math test will be retained automatically.

  7. Absent/Late Work Policy: Make Up Work Students shall be permitted to make up assignments and tests following any absence. All students will receive credit for satisfactory makeup work after an absence, including excused and unexcused absences and absences due to suspension from school. For students at the elementary level, the district shall not impose a grade penalty for makeup work after an unexcused absence. (See District Policy EIAB Local Days Late Percent of Grade Received by Student Example: 1Day – 20 points deducted) 2 Days – 40 points deducted 3 Days – 60 points deducted After 3 days, a zero will be given A student will be given as many days as he/she was absent to make up tests and other missed assignments. If a student does not complete the work assigned after the allotted number of days has passed, the actual grade of zero will be recorded in the grade book. Teachers are required to provide assignments prior to an absence, when requested by the student or parent. Please note: scheduled absences require principal approval with two weeks advanced notice. Students should not be required on the day of returning to school to take a quiz or test that was announced during the student’s absence.

  8. Dress Code Students are not to wear clothing that is tight, loose, sagging, cut, torn, baggy, revealing, spaghetti-strap, backless, low cut or short. Pants – must be worn at the waist or upper hip and must not reveal underclothing Shorts and Skirts - must be fitted at the waist or upper hip, must not reveal underclothing, and must be mid-thigh in length or longer Tops, Shirts and Blouses – must not reveal underclothing, midsection, torso, back, chest, breasts or cleavage Dresses – must not reveal underclothing, midsection, torso, back, chest, breasts, or cleavage and must be mid-thigh in length or longer Shoes – must not detract from or interfere with the learning environment or present a safety or health hazard. Tennis shoes or closed-toe shoes are preferred.

  10. Early Release Dates for 2013-2014 : September 11 September 25 October 9 October 23 October 28th and 29th for Teacher/Parent Conferences November 13 December 11 January 8 March 19 Please send a note or call the front office if there is a change in transportation.

  11. Cowboy Celebrations: *We will have our Friday Celebrations EVERY OTHER Friday in the gym. At that time, we will announce our bi-weekly Firecracker. This is a student picked by the teachers for accomplishments in the classrooms, both academic and behaviorally. Parents are welcome to attend at 7:40 (please check in at the front office before coming to the gym). *Students who have earned All A’s, A/B or Perfect Attendance will have ribbons with their report cards as well as behavioral coupons for 5 or less agenda marks. *We will host a Semester Awards Celebration at the end of each semester. *Fifth Grade will have an additional celebration at the end of the year during our Fifth Grade Completion Ceremony. This will be in May in which students get a Completion Certificate and other awards /acknowledgements that they earned throughout the year. *The Fifth Grade Party (in May) will be at Schlitterbahn. This is a fun way to celebrate the end of Elementary School with our Cowboys! We will begin sending information home in April.
