  2. Location • The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 near Shaprsburg Maryland and Antietam Creek.

  3. Casualties • The bloodiest single day battle in American history with 23,000 casualties 1,546 killed 7,752 wounded 1,018 captured/missing 2,108 killed 9,540 wounded 753 captured/missing

  4. Who Won? • The Battle of Antietam is a tactically inconclusive victory for both sides, they both suffered high losses while the Confederacy loses less troops, the Union gains significant strategic ground in Maryland.

  5. Significance • The battle of Antietam was the first significant battle of the Civil War to take place on Northern Soil. • It was after this battle that the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln.
