  1. Battle Of Antietam Sharpsburg, Maryland Meagan Harris, Tanner Grace, Hannah Higgins, & Cade Pearson.

  2. Dates/Key Players • September 16-18, 1862 • One interesting fact is that it was the bloodiest day in America with 23,000 casualties. • The key players of Antietam were George B. McClellan, Robert E. Lee, Joseph Hooker, Ambrose Burnside, A.P Hill, Joseph K. F. Mansfield, Johnny Cook, Oliver Otis, George B. Anderson, and General Isacc P. Rodman.

  3. Summary/Effect • On Sep. 16, 1862 George B. McClellan and his union army of the Potomac confronted Robert E. Lee’s army of northern Virginia at Sharpsburg, Maryland. At dawn on Sep. 17 Maj. General Joseph Hooker’s Union mounted a powerful assault on Lee’s left flank that started the beginning of the Battle of Antietam. • When this battle ended it changed the course of the war. The slaves were freed when Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation. Also one of the reasons this battle started was because the south wanted recognition from Europe and when the North won this battle it caused Great Britain to think twice before joining the Confederacy.
