  1. WORLD WAR II • OUTBREAK: Rise of A. Hitler & the Nazi’s through 1930’s. • 9/1/39: Germany invades Poland; Great Britain & France declare war on Germany. • Summer of 1940: Germany controls nearly all of Europe (including France) except Britain.

  2. OUTBREAK WWII • Germany (Hitler), Italy (Mussolini), Japan (Tojo) form the AXIS Power alliance: • Japan invades China and the Pacific Islands, Italy takes over North Africa, and Germany attacks England in 1940 (Battle of Britain.) • Britain elects Winston Churchill as Prime Minister to fight WWII.

  3. Europe 1940-41 • Germany is repelled in Battle of Britain by Royal Air Force; decides to violate treaty with J. Stalin and invades the Soviet Union in summer of 1941. • Battle of Stalingrad: Germans & Soviets fight brutal battles on the eastern front in winter of 1941-42.

  4. US supports the Allies • FDR wanted to stop Hitler, but American public wanted neutrality. • FDR supplies Britain & Soviet Union with money & supplies. • LEND-LEASE: US gives Destroyers for British bases in the western hemisphere. • Gen. G. Marshall: US Commander

  5. US enter WWII • Japan had negotiated with US through 1941, Japan wants an empire in the Pacific; US refuses. • 12/7/41: Japan surprise attacks Pearl Harbor (Day of Infamy)- the United States declared War on Japan & Germany in December of 41.

  6. NORTH AFRICA Campaign • ALLIES: (US & Britain) invade North Africa to push Germany & Italy out. (Operation Torch). • 1942-43: Allies led by Gen. G. Patton (US) and Gen B. Montgomery (UK) defeat Gen. E. Rommel (Desert Fox) of Germany) in Desert Warfare. Allies invade Italy late 1943, Mussolini is overthrown.

  7. Pacific Theatre • US uses grueling “Island Hopping” in south Pacific to push Japanese back. Led by Gen. D. MacArthur, the U.S. liberates the Philippines by 1944. Harsh fighting leads to many casualties. Admiral C. Nimitz leads amphibious assaults on Japanese controlled islands.

  8. Operation Overlord • June 6, 1944: Allies lead the largest armada in history to invade Normandy France from England led by Gen. D. Eisenhower. Allies engage in brutal attack & push Germans back across France. (Operation Market Garden) and the Battle of the Bulge).

  9. Invasion of Germany • Late 1944-early 1945: Allies invade Germany & push toward Berlin. • April 1945: Hitler dies, and the German surrender. (V-E) Day. • Allies discover the massive atrocities of the Nazi regime (Holocaust.)

  10. BATTLE OF JAPAN • US leads invasion of Japan with massive aerial bombing. • Manhattan Project: US secret plan to develop the atomic bomb. • August 1945: U.S. drops 2 atomic bombs on Japan, who finally surrender (V-J Day). • WWII is finally over!
