  1. Puzzled Senior Projects 2011 Eric Babski ~ Ben Gagne ~ Erik Artus

  2. Background • Edaron Inc. - Jigsaw puzzle manufacturing company. • Control Department consists of two employees. • Inspect random bags of puzzles by hand. • # of pieces • Damaged pieces • Doubles • This takes too much time. There is also human error.

  3. Problem • Design and build a method/system that determines if there are any missing pieces in a sample puzzle. • Must be 99.5% accurate. • Count up to 20 - 500 piece puzzles/hour. • Must be compatible with any size puzzle (100-1500 pieces). • Must have digital user interface to read-out # of pieces.

  4. Possible Solutions • Weight- Scale system to check the weight of each puzzle before and after cutting into pieces. • Sound- uses electronic sensors to count the number of pieces by listening to them drop onto a surface. • Optical – Pieces are dropped through an electronic beam. • Physical Being – Have the pieces move along a conveyer belt and each piece hitting a button as it goes through and keeping a running count.

  5. Research and Development • Weight- Moisture content varies from sample to sample. Is it significant enough to skew results. • Sound- What sensors and landing surface materials work best for sensing puzzle pieces. • Optical- What sensors best apply? • Conveyer – Find sensitive pushbuttons, Conveyer belt systems, and piece separation techniques. • Feeding mechanism for all possible solutions?
