  1. EMAP Efforts in SF Bay • Overview of EMAP Western Pilot • Overview of Coastal component • Activities in SF Bay (FY 2000) • Relationship to other SF Bay efforts • Opportunities for collaboration

  2. What is the EMAP Western Pilot? • A monitoring demonstration of indicators and designs for measuring environmental progress • Probability based survey design • Multiple indicators • Unbiased estimates of conditions of ecological resources

  3. Scope of the Western Pilot • 3 Resource Components • Surface Waters - Rivers and streams in 12 western States • Coastal Waters - Estuaries and near coastal zone in 5 states • Landscapes - Landuse patterns in 12 western States

  4. Purpose of EMAP Western Pilot • Demonstrate the value of survey based monitoring • apply to real problems of Regional/State interest • Advance the science of monitoring • indicators • designs • reference conditions • assessment methods

  5. Objectives of EMAP Western Pilot • Estimate the condition of ecological resources (estuaries, rivers and streams, landscapes) • Identify likely stressors to these systems • Build State capacity for long-term monitoring

  6. Objective of Coastal Component • To create an integrated comprehensive coastal monitoring program across the West Coast states to assess estuarine condition • West Coast States: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii

  7. Schedule for Coastal EMAP • 1999 - Small Estuaries (CA, OR, WA) • 2000 - Large Estuaries (CA, OR, WA) • 2001 - Estuaries and Offshore (AK, HI) • 2002 - Offshore (CA, OR, WA) • 2003 - New Indicators and Reporting • 2004 - Reporting

  8. Coastal EMAP as a pilot for a Statewide Coastal Monitoring Program • Coordination among key players involved in coastal monitoring • Address issues of data comparability • Deal with challenges of information management

  9. Participating Agencies • Federal Agencies • EPA, NOAA, USGS • State Agencies • CDFG, SWRCB, RWQCB • Research Groups • SFEI, SCCWRP

  10. Sampling design

  11. SF Bay sampling and analyses (Summer 2000). Number of samples per indicator category

  12. SF Bay Sampling and Analyses (Summer 2000)Sediment chemistry

  13. SF Bay sampling and analyses (Summer 2000) Fish tissue analyses

  14. Priorities for Regional Monitoring Program Redesign • Status and Trends • Method Improvement • Refine analyte list • Refine mass budget models • Develop food web model • Bioaccumulation (trends) • Data review • Source evaluation and contaminant load • Effects of contaminants • Pesticides • Bioavailability of contaminants in sediments
