  2. Geography • Jamaica is located between Florida and South America. • Jamaica is a little island under Cuba • Natural hazards: • Hurricanes (especially July to November)

  3. Background Information • Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494. • The native people that lived in Jamaica before Christopher Columbus came were called the Taino Indians. • But, the Taino Indians were gradually exterminated and African slaves replaced them.

  4. Background Info continued • England had control of Jamaica in 1655 and set up a plantation economy. Some of the crops grown were sugar, cocoa, and coffee. • Jamaica broke away from the British control in 1962 and became independent for the first time in a long time.

More Background Information • Ethnic Groups- 91.2% of the people in Jamaica are black. 6.2% of the people are mixed that live in Jamaica. • Religions- There are many religions in Jamaica here are some of the popular ones. Protestant, Pentecostal, Baptist, and New Testament Church of God. • Languages- Jamaicans speak English • Population- 2,866,380, Jamaica is about the size of Connecticut.

  9. Usain Bolt • Usain Bolt is a three-time Olympic gold sprinter that was born and raised in Jamaica • He was born on August 21, 1986 in a little town called Trelawny , Jamaica. • During his childhood he enjoyed playing cricket and football. • Usain attended Waldensia Primary and All-age School

Bob Marley • Robert Nesta Marley is Bob Marley real name. • His mother name was Cedella Booker and his was fathers name was Captain Norval Marley, his father was a lot older then his mother. • Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945. • Bob Marley was shot on May 11, 1981 in Miami Florida.

Busta Rhymes • Busta’s real name is Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr. • Rhymes, is an American hip hop musician. • Born on May 20, 1972 • Some songs you might have heard from Busta Rhymes are “Woo Hah”, “What's It Gonna Be?”, and “Touch It.” • Busta is in the process of making a new album not yet named.

Biggie Smalls • Biggie Smalls is a nickname, his real name is Christopher George Letore Wallace. • Christopher was a famous rapper in New York in the 1980’s. • Biggie was born on May 21, 1972 and was shot on March 9 1997 in Las Vegas. • Some of his popular songs were Juicy, Big Poppa ,Suicidal Thoughts ,Gimme the Loot.

  13. Sean Kingston • Sean Kingston was born on February 3, 1990. • Was born in Miami Florida then moved to Kingston Jamaica. • Sean spent 21 days in jail for a breaking-and-entering at age 11. • Sean had his first hit single at age 16 “Colors 2007”

  14. Current Events • Jamaican Government Seeks Health Partners In Diaspora • Right now in Jamaica the prime minister is try hard to improve healthcare. Jamaica is trying partner up with a organization called the Ministry of Health. With this partnership they will be able to improve the healthcare in Jamaica.
