  2. What is a Middle College ??? It is a collaboration between a high school district and a community college to allow high school students that are struggling or need a different learning environment to thrive. ARG

  3. What is a Middle College???? • A middle college is a high school on a college campus • The very first middle college was established in 1976 at LaGuardia Community College in New York • Kettering High School will be the initial location of the DAHMCHS, beginning September 2007. ARG

What is the mission of the Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School? • To serve young people who are … • Interested in the Allied Health careers • Academically Capable • In need of motivation or alternative learning environment • To give experience that will bridge adjustment to a college campus ARG

  9. Student Population • All 9th and 10th grade students who “want to come” and have an interest in Allied Health careers • 10th graders – 2007/2008 academic year • 9th graders – 2008/2009 academic year ARG

  10. Who will be the first students in the DAHMCHS? • 100 Kettering students who will be entering the 10th grade in 2007/2008 academic year who are interested in Allied Health careers • Other students who have an interest in Allied Health careers ARG

Attributes of Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School • Students will have a wide range of experiences • Students will attend a high school on a college campus • 9th and 10th grade students begin in a high school environment with strong focus on literacy • Transition classes are offered during the 9th and 10th grades • In the next phase, students will attend actual college classes where only one third of class will be high school students ARG

Attributes of Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School • Daily seminars are provided when students are in college classes • Tutorial aspect • Discussion of text to build self-confidence • Study groups • Students attend high school classes in the morning and college classes in the afternoon • The goal is that EVERY youngster gets 30 college credits by end of 12th grade • The goal is that students earn an Associate Degree by the end of the 13th year ARG

Importance of location on college campus … • Being on a college campus affects the high school students’ view of themselves. • The college environment positively impacts the attitudes and behaviors of the high school students. • The power of a middle college is that the high school age students gradually interface with adult students. ARG

  15. Students (parents) enter the DAHMCHS with a clear understanding of the commitment needed for success • Summer is a requirement of the DAHMCHS experience. • Sometimes the day may be elongated. • A 13th year is required. ARG

Yields an Associate Degree and/or transferable college credits with no cost to the student or his/her family Provides students college credits from WCCCD that are transferable to other colleges and universities Includes student visits, internships, and work experience through its partner, the DMC Why attend Detroit Allied Health Middle College High School and not a “regular neighborhood high school”?   17. About parent commitment … • Attend informational meetings and parent-teacher conferences • Become actively involved in student’s educational experiences • Encourage students to complete requirements for both the diploma and the degree ARG

  18. Teachers function as counselors/advisors Teachers lead an advisory system called “focus groups” • Daily discussions regarding current events, personal issues, school issues, and study skills • Students tell teachers about their concerns • Counselors/advisors build confidence ARG

  19. DAHMCHS … • Prepares 9th and 10th grade students for challenging college courses and program entrance exams • Develops critical thinking skills • Offers a supportive system to integrate college courses ARG

  20. CONCERN … • Students under the age of 18 cannot attend clinical courses, as mandated by the state. • Therefore, 11th and 12th grade students can take liberal arts and other degree requirements, until they turn 18 years old. ARG

  22. At Completion of DAHMCHS • Detroit Public Schools will grant its own diploma • WCCCD will grant its own credits, certificate, and/or degree • DMC will offer career opportunities for successful candidates in critical shortage areas ARG
