  1. From Middle School to High School Transition into High School: Norwalk High School Registration Information 2019-2020

  2. Vision for Student Achievement: All students will graduate and be eligible to attend a four-year college or university without the need for remediation. Our students will possess the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to be successful in any post-secondary environment. Our graduates will have a strong sense of what occupation they would like to pursue as a career, and will have received personalized guidance as to which post-secondary institutions, training programs, or industries will best fit their personal goals.

Expected Student Learner Results: Norwalk High School graduates will be: Able to apply their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems by thinking critically and creatively, working collaboratively, and effectively utilizing technology. Prepared for success in both college and career. Responsible members of the Norwalk High School community.

Language Arts – 40 Math – 30 Science – 30 P.E. – 20 World History – 10 U.S. History – 10 Gov’t/Econ – 10 Fine Arts/Foreign Language/Technical Arts –20 Electives - 50 Total – 220 Credits Graduation Requirements - Credits Additional Graduation Requirements • Students must pass Common Core Mathematics I (minimum) • Minimum2.0 GPA

  5. UC and CSU Requirements • University of California A-G (grade of “C” or better): • A. History/Social Science: 2 years • B. English (Lit/Comp): 4 years • C. Math: 3 years* • D. Laboratory Science: 2 years* • E. Foreign Language: 2 years* • F. Visual/Performing Arts: 1 year • G. College Prep Electives: 1 year • *At least one additional year recommended

  6. Need a Helping Hand? • Tutoring is available in all core subjects before, during and/or after school. • Students and parents are advised to utilize PowerSchool REGULARLY to help manage and monitor progress. • There are daily contracts offered for parents who want to keep students on track.

  7. Honors – What to Do? • Have a serious discussion with your parents/guardians and counselor about this decision. • Make sure you can handle the honors coursework - how committed are you? • Make sure you can handle the number of courses you select - avoid “burn out.” • Keep things in balance.

Electives: Auto Comix Appreciation Read and analyze long form comics Class discussions, presentations, and essays Fundamentals for script writing, character design, page layout, and story creation • Develop skills in automotive maintenance and repair • Use technology, tools and equipment to diagnose malfunctions, disassemble units, parts inspection, and replacement Comp. Business Appl. Learn how to work more effectively and efficiently in the workplace Fundamentals of keyboarding, Microsoft Office, Business Communications and Career Preparation

Electives Art 1 Fashion Design 1 • An introduction to the various art materials used by visual artists • Proper use of materials, safety precautions, history & appreciation of art • A variety of projects introduce students to the world of fashion design, fashion illustration, fabric selection, construction, finishing, and color analysis • Learn the elements and principles of design and developing a line of fashion

Electives Web Page Design 1 Basics of the World Wide Web, web page authoring, and setting up a personal internet web site Topics include: Web browsers, text editors, HTML and CSS coding, graphic design, interactive techniques, multimedia, and web site promotion Construction and publication of regular editions of the school newspaper, learning the skills of newspaper writing and the responsibilities of newspaper business management Journalism 1

Electives Vocal Music Workshop Introduction to the art of singing Culture and the arts Note value, measures, treble clef Rhythm, sight reading, note names Band P.E./Wind Ensemble • Instrumental music marching band program - parade marching, field drill, and field pageantry • Perform at concerts, sports events, parades, public and school events • P.E. credit is given for Fall Semester

Electives Drama Culinary Arts Learn the basics of food preparation and nutrition for good health Learn to shop for food and plan nutritious meals and snacks • Overview of theatre • Emphasis on history, acting skills, improvisation, and basic technical responsibilities • Creativity and critical thinking

Electives Jazz Ensemble Dance 1 Develops loco motor dance movements, covers turns and floor progressions, and enables students to develop their own dance routines Encompasses a variety of dancing such as jazz dance, ballet, modern, social and more • Jazz Band is a performance course designed to develop your knowledge in the styles of jazz • The group performs at concerts, school and public events • Jazz improvisation will also be studied • Fall audition is required

Electives Orchestra French 1 Introduction to linguistic and cultural structures necessary for basic communication in French Designed to teach the basic elements of the French language and culture • Learn to play and perform selected literature for Chamber Orchestra • Learn numerous tunes in order to prepare for group performances

Electives Spanish 1 & 2 Spanish Native Speaker 1 & 2 Designed specifically for students who possess Spanish literacy skills upon enrollment Instruction builds students’ potential for success in AP Spanish studies in 11th & 12th grade Instruction extends students’ skills in reading/interpreting Spanish literature, and developing writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills • Introduction to linguistic and cultural structures necessary for basic communication in Spanish • Designed to teach the basic elements of the Spanish language and culture • Level placement is based on a language assessment evaluation

The College & Career Center • Visitors from different colleges come to speak to students. • They help with applications, admissions, choosing majors, financial aid, and address questions students have. • Regular visitors to our campus: • UCLA • UCI • UC Berkeley • Cal State Long Beach • Cal State Fullerton • Cerritos College • Cypress College

  20. The Career Center • Many different guest speakers come to talk about potential career options for all students. • Visitors include, but are not limited to: • Lawyers • Armed Services • Cosmetologists • Engineers • Firefighters/Police • Doctors/Medical Professionals
