  2. Today • Go over syllabus, grading, homework, etc • Start reviewing material from prior classes • Section R • Graphing Equations Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

Why take this course? • For people who are looking to take calculus • Note that this is the math class that WILL be added into your GPA • Note also that this course (generally) doesn’t transfer as a math course (You may need to take Math 120, also, to transfer this) • Thus the assumption is that if you’re here, you’re planning on going on to Math 120, etc • PreReq: • Math 95 (2.0 or higher) OR placement into this course • Placement into ENG 101 Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  4. Goals • Relax & enjoy math • Master the material in this class • Learn how to learn new math concepts • Learn how to present (mathematical) ideas to others Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

You need this immediately, so don’t delay!!! Best to do the reading before class Try to bring the book to class (Each group of people should bring at least 1 book amongst them) Required Book Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

Calculators • You’re required to have a graphing, scientific calculator for this class • Calculator rentals • In the Open Learning Center, 1st come, 1st served • Calculators are typically on-sale only in the fall • If you find any good deals, let me know & I’ll relay to the class Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  9. Calculators • If you do buy a TI-83, 84, 86, 89, etc • If you have a different, graphing, calc. (HP, etc) • I’ll try to help you with it, but your mileage may vary • Bringing the calculator’s manual to class will help • BRING YOUR CACLUATOR NEXT CLASS! • If it’s not a TI-83, bring the manual, too!   11. No Cheating! • “In the event copying should occur, the plagiarist will receive a grade of zero for the assignment. Behavior Rules • Quiet while I’m lecturing • Whisper, if you talk at all • If you have trouble hearing me, sit towards the front • Work during In Class Exercise time • If you finish a problem, try the next one • If you finish everything, chose more problems on your own Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

Grading • Details in syllabus • You’re responsible for everything there, even if I don’t talk about it now. • 500 points for the quarter • Every point has the same weight as any other • Exams • TWO exams, drop none • 100 pts each • Final Exam • 150 points • Homework • 60 points • Collaborative Project • 50 points • Class Presentation • 40 points Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  14. Grading • A 2.0 is obtained by getting 75% of the available points • This is 375 or more points Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  18. Pairwise Interviews: Your Math History • Group up in pairs • A triple is ok, if there is an odd number of people • 5 minutes to: • Introduce yourself – name, what brings you to Cascadia, what do you want to get from it, etc. • Ask about prior courses in math – when was the last time you took a course, what was it, how did you do, how do you feel about it, etc • 5 minutes to: • Introduce your buddy, to your buddy • (i.e., make sure you don’t say anything that will embarrass the person  ) • 5 minutes to present your summary to another pair, and listen to their presentation. • Then I’ll call on some people to intro their buddy Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  19. Save A Copy Of All Work!! • In-class work, EXAMS, Quizzes, etc,etc • If you work with someone, make sure each of you gets a copy • For in-class work, you don’t have to hand it in • (I’ll be checking it as I walk around & watch you work) • If you lose track of it, and I mis-record it, then whatever I’ve got will stand as a grade Math 110: Pre-Calculus!

  20. Next: Math Review • Get into small groups (3-4 people each) • Each group takes one of the review sections • Do all the problems, with the help of your memory, your book, and your peers • If you get done early, go on to the next section • Towards the end of class, each group will stand up & explain 1 or 2 questions • GOAL: Everyone has seen how to solve every type of problem Math 110: Pre-Calculus!
