  1. The importance of DELIVERY Speech Delivery

  2. What makes a good speech?

  3. Speak Clearly • Enunciate so the audience can understand what you are saying. • Speak slowly and keep a good pace • Use emphasis to make your speech more interesting.

  4. Enunciation Exercises • Open and close mouth easily as you repeat:  FahFahFahFah Blah Blah • Loosening your jaw: SahKah She Fah RahPahKah She Fah RahWahKah She Fah RahBajKah She Fah RahDahKah She Fah Rah • Loosening your lips: lllldl www ldlwlwd • Phrases for precise articulation:"The tip of the tongue, the teeth and the lips""Repetition, repetition, repetition"We'll weather the weather whatever the weather whether we like it or not"

  5. Emphasis • I did not kill my mother.

  6. Speak Loudly Enough • All of the audience needs to be able to hear you. • Use a variety of volumes to emphasize information of speech and to keep the listener’s interest.

  7. Make Eye Contact • look directly at a single member of the audience for two or three seconds (no longer than that, or the person will think that you are staring), and then moving on to look at someone else. • Maintaining eye contact is one way of remembering to engage the audience • you will not forget that you are speaking to individuals and not a faceless crowd.

  8. Use of Space • Remember where you are while you are speaking. • Your location in relation to your audience can convey different messages… intimacy or authority depending on what you wish to accomplish. • Move around, but be careful not to move too much because it can be distracting to your audience.

  9. Presence • Project authority over the subject matter… show the audience you know what you are talking about with your attitude. • Stand up straight • Build a relationship with your audience with a smile. • Hide your nervousness. The signs of nervousness will go away after the first minute as the presentation of your argument takes control of your mind and body.

  10. Gestures • Gestures are important but don’t use them too much. • Do gestures that feel comfortable and normal to you. • Avoid using the same gestures over and over again to avoid boredom in the audience.

  11. Put all these elements together and you will give a great speech…. • And of course, don’t forget to practice.

  12. Examples: • Watch these following video clips and evaluate the effectiveness of their speech delivery… poor excellent • PACE 1 2 3 4 5 • ENUNCIATION • VOLUME • PRESENCE • GESTURES • CONNECTION WITH THE AUDIENCE
