Students from SPAN 1110 are having problems to pronounce properly Spanish words, as well as remembering the endings of the verbs.
Ames’ study will help us to understand why this problem is occurring. The students were not motivated. On the contrary, Bandura suggests that positive feedback enhances motivation.
The teacher decided that at the end of the semester the students that speak Spanish better will receive an scholarship to visit Spain for a month. With a mastery goal, importance is attached to developing new skills and the attainment of mastery is seen as dependent on effort.
For the students is more important to speak properly Spanish than earning a high grade. That is why, with the mastery goal, they worked hard to learn Spanish and, as a reward, they visited Spain.
