Recognising the problems • University strategy: • How do we increase our outgoing numbers significantly? • How do we demonstrate employability and inclusivity? • Need to appeal to a wider audience • Study Abroad perspective: • Limited numbers on traditional exchanges • Students tend to be from similar backgrounds • Administrative burden of small schemes • Student perspective: • Academic achievement and time pressures • Financial implications • Socio-economic and cultural background pressures Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility

Identifying options • Encourage 3+1 degree programmes • Offer more options for vacations: • Assymetric exchanges – summer school places • Language schools • Discipline specific summer schools • Volunteering organisations e.g. Camp America, VSO etc. • Encourage independent travel • Funding required Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility

Finding solutions • Top level support : • VC initiative – International Study Centre • Funded group programme • Open to all (disciplines, levels) • Alumni Engagement: • University of York in America – US Alumni Connections Awards • Studying in North America • Networking with alumni • Internships and work experience Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility

Case Study: International Study Centre • 2012 VC initiative – funding for development of study centre • Brief: • A new initiative – a short summer programme • An academic and cultural experience in the USA • Offering students an alternative international experience • Improving employability and leadership skills • Enhancing skills for CV and gaining a global perspective • Timing – first cohort to go in summer 2013 (less than 12 mths) Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility

Holyoke • Research and visit to New York sites and Mt.   9. Case Study: International Study Centre How much did it cost to the students? The total cost was approximately £2000 per student. This included: • Tuition fees • Room and board at Mount Holyoke College • International flights and transfers • New York City cultural experience (food, entertainment and accommodation) • Considerations for future: • Group travel from York vs. meeting students at point • Travelling after course – flight changes etc. Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility

Funding - £50k – international relations officer role, material costs Bursaries - £5k from Santander International Connections (10 x £500 travel bursaries) Requested £10k from alumni association in America to cover 5 x £2000 full bursaries for selected needs-based applications International Relations Operations budget - £15k - cover shortfall Seminar Series: Encouraging Outward Student Mobility
