  1. Competency 1.1 Characteristic of Teachers

  2. Purpose • Students who practice self-assessment will be better prepared for the reflective analysis required in post-secondary education programs. This activity will help students recognize the qualities they currently possess that will help them be successful as teachers and what qualities they need to develop.

  3. Objectives • Students will identify the qualities of excellent and successful teachers. • Students will analyze their personal qualities and write a paper discussing these qualities and implications for their future teaching careers.

  4. Anticipatory Set • Think about your favorite teacher. • List the characteristics which made them memorable.

  5. Instruction • Good teachers have certain characteristics which make them successful in the classroom ranging from humanistic to organizational.

  6. Issaquah School District evaluation forms: • What are administrators looking for in teachers? • Are these different than what parents or students are looking for? • Similarities/Differences…

  7. Characteristics of an Excellent Teacher • 1. Deep Knowledge of Subject Matter • Has extensive training in their content area.

  8. 2. Instructional Planning • Prepares lessons in advance. Collaborates with other teachers to align lessons with state standards.

  9. 3. Knowledge of Assessment and Evaluation • Evaluates students using learning objectives that are clear to learners and their families.

  10. 4. Understand Students and How They Learn • Believes that every child can learn and tailors instruction to fit the needs of all students.

  11. 5. Motivates Students to Learn • Creates learning opportunities that use all learning styles and makes learning fun and relevant.

  12. 6.Creates Safe, Productive and Well-Managed Classrooms • Establishes firms and fair discipline policies that emphases regular attendance, respect, and good conduct.

  13. 7. Understands and Appreciates Diversity • Demonstrates zero tolerance for discrimination, bigotry, bullying, or harassment. Promotes tolerance and respect for all genders, races and cultures.

  14. 8. Promotes Strong Home-School-Community Relations • Creates multiple channels for communications with parents and community members.

  15. 9. Commitment to Lifelong Learning • Shares successes and challenges with other teachers in order to grow and learn.

  16. What qualities do you think you possess? • What are specific examples about YOURSELF and YOUR ACTIONS that back up your choices?

  17. Assessment • Complete “I will make a good teacher because” assignment. • Write an essay describing the characteristics you have that will help you be an excellent teacher and those qualities on which you need work.

  18. In Closing • Teachers are all different but teachers who stand out as excellent in the field have many qualities in common.

  19. Optional: • Interview students at your internship and ask what they look for in a teacher. • Summarize your results in a chart or graph.
