  3. Course Objectives By the end of the course, students are able to: choose relevant study skills for academic purposes identify suitable academic reading strategies respond appropriately to academic situations in English present ideas appropriately and effectively

  4. Course Synopsis This course involves developing study skills and reading strategiesfor academic purposes. It also covers practice in speaking and writing in academic settings.

  5. Assessment Assignment 1 20% Assignment 2 20% Mid-semester Exam 30% Final Exam 30%

  6. EXAM FORMAT • MID SEMESTER EXAM  (30%) – Subjective questions • The mid-semester exam is divided into 4 sections. • You will be tested on the following format: • Section A – Reading Comprehension • Section B – Parts of Speech • Section C – Dictionary Meaning • Section D – Scanning for Information (Non-linear) • Duration : 1 hour

  7. EXAM FORMAT • FINAL EXAM (30%) – • 30 Multiple choice questions and 10 Subjective questions • The final exam is divided into 4 sections according to the following format: • Multiple choice questions- • Section A -Cloze Passage • Section B -Grammar • Section C -Vocabulary • Subjective questions- • Section D -Reading Comprehension • Duration : 1 ½ hours

  10. Reading Skills ( Linear Texts) Skimming Scanning Identifying main ideas Recognizing Topic Paraphrasing Predicting and making inferences Finding word meaning in context

  11. Reading Skills ( Non-Linear Text) Recognizing Topic Scanning diagrams, tables, maps for information Reading and following instructions Inferring

  14. Assignment 1 Read the following passage and then respond to the following tasks. Task 1 (14 Marks)  Identify three words that belong to each of the following word classes of parts of speech from the reading passage. Construct your own sentence using any ONE of the words that have been identified for each word class. Task 2 (15 Marks)  Some irregular verbs have different PAST forms in Britain and the United States. Provide the correct past form for the following irregular verbs.

  15. Task 3 (9 Marks)  Based on the given passage, identify words that have the following sounds / f /, / k / and / ʃ /. Put the words into the correct columns. Task 4 (2 Marks)  Identify 2 words that have consonants which are not pronounced. Underline the consonants.  eg : comb, plumber Total marks 40/2=20 marks TO BE SUBMITTED TO PPL OFFICE BY WEEK 6 (16 Mac 2012)
