  3. H-Bomb • 1952 US has first Hydrogen Bomb • 1953 Soviets test Hydrogen Bomb • Over the next few decades US and Soviets built number of nuclear weapons

  4. Mutually assured destruction • Policy in which the US and Soviet Union hoped to stay out of war by building enough weapons to destroy each other

  5. Massive Retaliation • Policy threatening to use massive force in response to aggression • Introduced by John Foster Dulles “A potential aggressor must know that he cannot always prescribe battle conditions to suit him…The way to deter aggression is for the free community to be willing and able to respond vigorously at places and with means of his choosing”

  6. Brinkmanship • John Foster Dulles believed that only going to the brink of war could the US protect its allies, discourage communist aggression, and prevent war • “You have to take some chances for peace, just as you must take chances in war” • John Foster Dulles

  7. Eisenhower Doctrine • Policy of President Eisenhower that stated that the US would use force to help any nation threatened by communism • Sent troops to Lebanon to put down a revolt against its pro-American government

  8. Battle into Space • October 4, 1957 Soviets launched a tiny satellite called Sputnik I • Next month they launched another, carrying a dog

  9. Battle into Space • US responded by passing the National Defense Education Act, produce more teachers and scientist • NASA was created to deal with space relations
