  1. 4 Pruning Mistakes to Avoid

  2. Regularly pruning your trees and shrubs promotes fruit and flower production and can help ward off disease, but only if pruning is done effectively. It can be tough to remember when and where to prune each tree, so that’s why it’s sometimes best to leave pruning to professionals. 02

  3. 1. Pruning at the Wrong Time of Year Most trees require pruning through the winter but not all. Plum and cherry trees, for instance, are vulnerable to disease if pruned at the wrong time of year and should be pruned in the summer. 02

  4. 2. Pruning too Much Stems and leaves are a tree’s carbohydrate sources and pruning too much rob them of the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Taking off too much at once can cause the plant to go into shock and the tree can take years to recover from this. 02

  5. 3. Pruning in the Wrong Spot A node is a place where a leaf, bud, or shoot comes off the stem. When pruning, it’s important to trim just above the node but not too close as that can damage it. Pruning strategically gives you some control over where new branches will form. 02

  6. 4. Pruning with Dirty Secateurs A secateur is the tool you would use to prune a tree. They work like very sharp scissors. Because they’re used outside, you might not think you need to keep them clean but pruning with dirty secateurs can damage your tree. When secateurs are dirty, they become blunt, and cutting with blunt secateurs won’t produce a clean cut which will affect the way the branches grow back. What’s more, you could spread disease between plants by not cleaning your tools between pruning sessions. 02
