  7. because you are who you are.

  8. Just as the universe has structure,

  9. your writing must have structure.

  10. Format for the Five-Paragraph Essay

  11. Trace your right hand on a sheet on paper.

  12. Label the thumb as the introductory paragraph.

  13. First Paragraph (Thumb) 1. Gain the attention of the reader. 2. Make a transition to the thesis statement. 3. Write a thesis statement.

  14. The topic of the paper as stated in the thesis statement has three parts-- Bing, Bang, Bongo.

  15. A thesis statement is the last sentence of the first paragraph and states the topic of the entire paper.

  16. Label the middle three fingers as bing, bang, and bongo.

  17. In the second paragraph write about the first major idea in the thesis statement. Bing

  18. In the third paragraph write about the second major idea in the thesis statement. Bang

  19. In the fourth paragraph write about the third major idea in the thesis statement. Bongo

  20. The Fifth Paragraph is the conclusion. Label the little finger as the conclusion.

  22. Pre-Writing The purpose of pre-writing is to obtain three good ideas to write about.

  23. Use a few minutes to write down everything you know about the topic.

  24. Pick out three ideas that go together and that would be easy to write about.

  25. You and your spouse with three lovely children have just moved to Sunrise, South Dakota, where the school board is debating whether or not the school year should be extended three months to raise student test scores which were very low last year.
