  1. The Holocaust Dachau “The extermination of the Jews had no political or economic justification. It was not a means to any end; it was an end in itself. The killing of Jews was not considered just a part of the war effort, but equal to it; thus, resources that could have been used in the war were diverted instead to the program of extermination.”

  2. The Holocaust “The Holocaust was the systematic, bureaucratic, state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. ‘Holocaust’ is a word of Greek origin meaning ‘sacrifice by fire.’ The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were ‘racially superior’ and that the Jews, deemed ‘inferior,’ were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community. During the era of the Holocaust, German authorities also targeted other groups because of their perceived ‘racial inferiority’: Roma (Gypsies), the disabled, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians, and others). Other groups were persecuted on political, ideological, and behavioral grounds, among them Communists, Socialists, Jehovah's Witnesses, and homosexuals.” http://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005143

  5. Felix Sparks

  6. “At 9:22am, he received a message from division level ordering him to secure what was described as a ‘concentration camp.’ It was located on the outskirts of a town called Dachau… ‘S-3 to all battalions,’ read the message. ‘Upon capture of Dachau, post air-tight guard and allow no one to enter or leave.’” “Sparks consulted a map he kept… the camp was around a mile to his east, on the edge of the city of Dachau… Dachau was as pretty as any other town the Thunderbirds had seen in Bavaria: cobbled streets… with brightly painted shutters. There were fresh beds of spring flowers…”

  7. But then something happened… “I Company arrived at some railroad tracks… “I Company men had captured a tall and burly German who was wearing an SS uniform... He made a break for it. Several shots were fired and he fell to the ground, dead.”

  8. “Sparks then caught sight of the Dachau complex for the first time. It resembled some kind of garrison surrounded by a ten-foot-high brick wall.” “Sparks could see… a large gate That was closed. A giant concrete eagle with Nazi insignia at its base towered above the gate.”

  9. “… His men set out along the tracks, Sparks again following not too far behind. It was the smell they noticed first. There was a nauseatingly sweet odor in the air. Someone said it reminded him of the Chicago stockyards… ‘What’s a freight train doing here?’ a soldier asked.”

  10. “Degro looked inside the first boxcar. “There were bodies on top of bodies, waist-deep, stacked like cordwood. The corpses were skin and bone. Human excrement was all around. Nearby, Pvt. John Lee looked into another boxcar and saw corpses riddled with bullets… several of the dead had open eyes. Their last moments of agony were etched on their faces. It was if others were staring at the Thunderbirds… asking ‘What took you so long?’ “Many of the victims were naked. Some had been whipped. In one car, a dead man lay on bodies, his face frozen in agony, having cut off his leg with his own hands. The stump was covered in dirty paper.”

  11. “There were thirty-nine boxcars in all, containing some two thousand corpses. The train had left Buchenwald with around forty-eight hundred prisoners some three weeks earlier. It had first stopped so hundreds could be shot.” “Then Sparks saw a girl. He would never forget her face. She lay on top of a pile of bodies, her eyes wide open, imploring. It was as if she were looking into the skies, searching for an answer: ‘Why?’ “Sparks spotted two dead inmates on the ground nearby. They had been killed in the most bestial way… then he vomited. One of the victims had enough strength to crawl out of one of the boxcars. But then a German had crushed his skull with a rifle butt. “His brains were splattered over the ground.”

  12. “Scouts from I Company discovered a building at the center of the Dachau complex. It was a hospital of some kind… The scouts… discovered it was an infirmary for SS guards… others ordered the Germans lying in bed to get outside, where many soon cowered, hands in the air, some still bandaged… “As far as I Company’s men were concerned, the young men holding their hands above their heads were SS, the ‘Protection Squadron,’ their insignia of two lightning bolts indicated they were Hitler’s most fanatical troops. That was all that mattered. They had massacred defenseless GIs at Malmedy. They had ruthlessly employed flamethrowers to scorch the men’s fellow Thunderbirds to death at Repertswiller that January. Always they had fought the hardest to kill the Americans, to slow their advance, most recently in Aschaffenburg and Nuremburg. They had, it appeared to the Thunderbirds, also overseen the unimaginable atrocities at Dachau.”
