  3. What are Germs? Viruses Fungi Bacteria

  4. What are Bacteria? • Are they Plants? • Are they Animals? NO, they are tiny microorganisms

  5. Are all Bacteria Bad? No, there are good bacteria and bad bacteria

  6. Good Bacteria: • Help us digest our food • Are in foods like yogurt • Clean up our environment • Compost waste

  7. Bad Bacteria: • Make us sick • Cause infections • Destroy things

  8. What are viruses? • Viruses are tiny microorganisms • They cannot live without a host body • They cause illnesses like colds and the flu

  9. What are fungi? • A fungus is an organism • Some are big enough to see like the mushrooms that we eat • Some are tiny and can cause disease • Some cause other problems like the mold that can make your shower black

  10. How do germs hurt us? • Germs get into our bodies in many ways • We breathe them in the air • They can get in through cuts and scrapes • They can be in the food we eat

  11. How can we prevent bacteria in our food? • Always keep cold food in the fridge or freezer except when we are using it • Cook meats thoroughly • Wash dishes and utensils every time we use them • NEVER eat food that fell on the floor or other dirty surface

  12. How our bodies fight germs • Our skin is a shield to keep germs out • There are hairs in our noses that remove germs from the air we breathe • There are special cells in our blood to fight the germs that get in

  13. What germs do to us • Runny nose • Tummy ache • Sore throat or ears • Fever • Body hurts
