  2. The mission AVID ‘s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

  3. Avid: 30 year success Over 30 years, AVID has become on of the most successful college-preparatory programs and today reaches more than 400,000 students in approximately 4,800 schools in 48 states and 16 other countries.

What is avid? • A structured, college preparatory system working directly with schools and districts. • A direct support structure for students determined to succeed, grades 4-16 • A school wide approach to curriculum and rigor adopted by more than 4,800 schools in 48 states and 16 countries. • A professional development program providing training for teachers throughout the world.

  5. Avid is not • A remedial program • A program for students already taking multiple honors and AP courses • A study skill program

  6. Avid is A system for motivated students who think they can take more challenging coursework if they have great teachers and support during the day.

  7. What is avid?

  8. 11 essentials • Students are selected from the middle and would benefit from AVID support to improve their academic records and begin college preparation. • Student and teacher participation is voluntary. • The school is committed to full implementation: AVID is scheduled as an academic elective. • AVID students are enrolled in a rigorous curriculum.

  9. 11 essential • A strong, relevant writing and reading curriculum is a basis for learning in the AVID elective class. • Inquiry is used as a basis for instruction in the AVID classroom. • Collaboration is used as a basis for instruction in the AVID classroom. • Trained tutors regularly facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum using AVID methodologies.

  10. 11 essentials • Program implementation and student progress are monitored through the AVID Data System and results are analyzed to ensure success. • The school or district identifies resources for program costs, supports the Essentials, participates in certification and commits to AVID staff development. • Active, interdisciplinary site teams collaborate on issues of access to and success in rigorous college preparatory classes.

  16. Avid at mea • Each student will be enrolled in the AVID elective class. • Students will apply the AVID strategies (WICOR)in every class. • College tours and other AVID activities will occur for students to participate in.
